By 1865, Johnson City had fallen victim to economic decline and had lost much of its importance as a commercial center. However, it continued to be known for its traditional Scottish culture and whisky production until it fell victim to Prohibition in 1933. Today, Johnson City is a small but vibrant community with active businesses and memories that date back centuries
On the morning of Friday, September 17, 1861, a group of men from Johnson City, New York gathered together to organize their town. They were determined to be part of the new United States and support the cause. The men had heard about the secession of Alabama and Mississippi and decided that they needed to do something to support their state brethren. After gathering some supplies, they set out on foot for General John A. Fremont's headquarters in Baltimore. There they met with other citizens who had also chosen to leave the Union. After a few days of discussion, the group voted unanimously to secede from the Union and form their own country - Confederate Tennessee. The men from Johnson City fought valiantly in Confederate Tennessee but unfortunately were not able to keep that country together as planned. Many died during the war or after it ended. Some very important people in Johnson City lost their lives including Mayor James Lacey, Congressman John Sherman and Brigadier General George Custer Jr..
