In 1602 AD Spanish missionary fray Marcos de Ovando established missions among the Tagalog people living along the coast of present day Leyte Province east of Manila Bay; these missions became known as "The New World". Slingshots developed out of this interest in bringing Christianity to new areas by using small ammunition instead of large guns for personal defense against local pagan adversaries or pirates who raided coastal settlements looking for wealth and slaves!
