Johnson City is a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Johnson City is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area and is included in the Chattanooga-Middletown-Johnson City Combined Statistical Area. It lies within eastern Tennessee on the banks of the river's rushing tributary, Hiwassee River. The town began as a trading post named for General Andrew Johnson by his father-in-law, Colonel John Troup (1739–1814). In 1811, General James Kensey built a ferryboat landing and store at what is now called "Kensey Landing". A few years later, he built a permanent cabin near present day downtown Johnson City to house his traders and their families while they awaited trade goods from upstream along the Hiwassee River. By 1816, Kensey had become one of Johnson City's most prominent citizens and contributed financially to its growth and development over time. In 1865, Tennessee became part of Union America during the American Civil War; as such, many Yankee soldiers settled in this region following their campaign against slavery in that war. The city began to grow rapidly due to these new settlers - by 1870 it had reached its current size with 2,500 residents living in 130 structures scattered around what are now downtown streets and squares. After World War II ended with defeat for Japan at Okinawa Peninsula Campaign on September 1 1945 (the final days of World War II), many Japanese Americans were forced into relocation or internment camps throughout much of southern United States after hostilities ceased; including Johnson City where some remained until 1954 when all Japanese Americans were ordered removed fromTennessee under Operation Paperclip by then President Dwight Eisenhower using Executive Order 9066 which revoked President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation that same year! Their two daughters married local farmers with similar backgrounds: Jane married Ezekiel Weems (1788-1864), who ran an orange orchard; Maria married James Irvine (1801-1875), who operated a sawmill;and Sarah married Nicholas Bosworth (1800-1864). Between 1800 and 1830, English colonists from Rhode Island began arriving in large numbers in what is now western Pennsylvania through Cumberland County to purchase land east of Pittsburgh for development into what would become Ohio County. They brought with them their churches and schools, which quickly attracted immigrants from all over northeastern America: many Germans settled around Lancaster; Irishmen moved downriver to Quaker Hill near Philadelphia; Scotsman founded Allegheny County north of Pittsburgh; Italians started farming around Easton; Poles arrived from Lublin region near Harrisburg; Dutch Settlers established several small communities south of Philadelphia before moving westward intouid other parts of Pennsylvania after Confederation became reality in 1781. In early 1825, General Robert Johnson decided that his father's village could not keep up with growing business interests elsewhere within New York State so he relocated his family to present-day Johnston Cityicenterville trusteeship on the Susquehanna River opposite Huntingdon Valley Township where they continued operations until 1830 when they sold outcompletelyto Colonel George Washington Reynolds (1796-1868) under whom they conducted increased trade activities including lumbering along newly laid tracks connecting anthracite coal mines at Chesterfieldtownship northwest of Philadelphia with new anthracite seams discovered further upstream at Monongahela Coal Mines southwest of Westmoreland Township via private enterprise until 1865 when those mines were closed due new advances in technology by Appalachian Coal Company responsible for much job loss throughout this period consequentely reducing coal production statewide resulting also increased demand for lignite mined elsewhere although no such impact occurred locally although much iron ore was exported annually prior to closure plus considerable future wealth because prices are today well below cost per tonne being less than $2 per pound compared even then against world average approaching $10 per tonne) despite extensive investment having been made initially including initial construction costs plus significant follow through costs plus ongoing maintenance/operating costs ever since! Although ultimately unsuccessful operation failure due mainly external factors rather than intrinsic problems unique to this particular mine type especially given technological advancements since then!)
