In 1814, President James K. Polk granted land to Colonel Robert Fulton for the construction of a canal through what is now New York City from Long Island Sound to the Atlantic Ocean. This canal would provide shipping access fromland to New York City and help create new jobs in the city during its boom years. Johnson City became a stop on this canal system and grew quickly as businesses opened up along its route! By 1827, there were over 20 businesses operating in Johnson City! Today, many of these businesses still operate today including: American Lawn Mowers (founded 1896), Broadway Bakery & Cafe (founded 1907), Gensler USA Elementary Schools (founded 1979), JB&J's Pizza (established 1957) - all within walking distance of each other! The town has seen some impressive changes over the years too- most notably when it came to its infrastructure! In 1923, two miles of dirt road were built between downtown and Bishop's Landing which served as an important artery for trade and transportation in this era! Today, one mile of that same road remains operational as Main Street!
