The settlement was initially called Westchester County because it lay west of Manhattan. The name changed to Jamestown in honor of James I, King of England who had given his consent for the colony to be established. The first chancellorship at Jamestown was held by John Smith, an indentured servant from Virginia who had been hired to help build Fort Orange on Long Island Sound. In 1609, Captain Christopher Newport sailed into what is now Rhode Island and claimed it for England as part of fee Simple pursuant to royal grant from Queen Elizabeth I. As part of its history, Jamestown has also beenthe site of numerous battles between British troops and Native Americans including the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775), which led to the end of British rule in North America; the Battle of Saratoga (1777) during which General George Washington defeated Colonel John Burgoyne; and King George's War (1755-1763) in which Lieutenant-General James Wolfe won a decisive victory over British forces at Quebec City.
