More than 350 years ago, Jamestown was founded as an English trading post on the southern tip of North America. The town was named after James II of England, who had been driving a British family out of their holdings in the region. In 1624, the English Crown granted Jamestown an exemption from taxation and began to build a military fortification around it. The first residents were Englishmen and women who had come overLAND to help defend the colony against French attacks. In 1628, Sir George Salisbury developed plans for an ox-drawn road that would connect New York City with Jamestown. This road became known as the Salisbury Road and led directly to New York City. By this time, Jamestown had become a prosperous community with its own school system, churches, and taverns. It also became home to some of the first permanent white American settlers in what is now Pennsylvania and Delaware. By 1636, however,Jamestown was under attack by Native Americans led by Chief Powhatan. The English garrison defended the settlement until they could be replaced by more professional troops under Colonel Woodward in May of that year. Afterward, Powhatan took over control ofJamestown and demolished most ofthe town's infrastructure while he looted and burned everything within sight.When word arrived back at London about these events,Sir John Smith responded by ordering his forces to march on Powhatan's capital at Prince's County Courthouse instead. Smith captured 400 people prisoner (including Chief Powhatan), burned down many homes,and compensated all local landowners for their losses totaling £30 000 worth of goods and services). Although this campaign marks one point in colonial history where Native Americans played a significant role in settler life in America., it also provides evidence that Indian resistance was not always completely defeated by force

In 1729, General William Fairfax Purchase laid out land for the town of Alexandria on the Rappahannock River opposite modern day Falls Church, Virginia. The town was established as an agricultural center with plantations producing tobacco and other crops. In 1801, Alexandria became part of Fairfax County when it was created from parts of Prince George's and Fairfax counties. In 1819, following the American Revolution, Jamestown reverted to its original name - Yorktown - after King James I's attempt to reestablish British rule over North America ended in failure. The name has been used sporadically since then as various places have claimed it including Yorktown Heights on Long Island City; Richmond; and Williamsburg insylvania
