These grants provided for 300Irishmen named "New Sweden" to settle in Pennsylvania; 400 Dutch immigrants called "Nieuw Nederland" (New Netherland) to settle near Albany; 250 Puritans from Bristol called "Middelburghers" (Middlebury) to settle near Hartford; 10 men from London's St Paul's Churchyard named "West India Company" (WIC) employees settled on Long Island; 20 men from London's Charterhouse School named "East India Company" (EIC) employees settled at Gravesend on Thames River; 5 boys from London's Christchurch School named “Providence” (Plymouth) employees settled at Gowanus Creek on Brooklyn Heights). Following King James I's death in April 1625, his son Charles II granted further land grants throughout England and Scotland for colonization purposes including 500 acres (2 hectares) each grant unto John Winthrop Sr., Evan Thomas alias Roane alias Darebin alias Piscataway alias Jobin alias Jarrett alias Kittridge alias Havercamp alias Wolkenhayn etc., plus an additional 50 acres apiece unto other prominent citizens or gentlemen inhabitants thereof who should make themselves found therein before Februarie following next year: And all these lands being enclosed about a square foote . . . And wee did erect thereon two small walls about 30 feet high...And soe did Wee have good store of victuals not only for our selfes but also for those that went with us into this new world... wee had likewise built other houses thereupon which we called Roches D'Or because they stood upon foursquare foundations like faire rocke stones set up together without any mortar or plainge: And wee said that this place should be called Jamestown after Mr John Ratcliffe who built it aforetime... [This] is an evidence that some people thoughteth it fitt To name placesafter persons or things rather then after their original proprietors." It is generally agreed that John Ratcliffe was instrumental in designing and constructing Jamestown as it stands today - he donated land specifically for building a fortification around it as well as providing food storage facilities and housing for its pioneering settlers. Over time, many different names have been given to Jamestown - among them Monmouth County Courthouse Complex/Jamaica Plain Historic District*, Plymouth Plantation*-both active properties administered by Monmouth County government-Williamsburg*-active property administered by Richmond County government-, West Point Military Academy*- inactive property administered by United States Army-, Easton**- abandoned site*, Newtown**-. Although many variations exist among these namesakes', all share one common goal - promoting historical research associated with Jamestown Valley.*
