In 1617, Pocahontas married John Rolfe, an adventurer from Plymouth Colony who had traveled through South Carolina and met Captain John Smith while exploring Virginia in 1600. Rolfe hoped to find a route across North America to Asia without risking open warfare with Spanish forces or passing through their territory. He also wanted revenge against his father-in-law for molesting him when he was younger.Rolfe learned about Jamestown from Smith and decided to settle there instead of returning home because he thought it would be a safe place for womenfolk not involved in open warfare against Spaniards
The Jamestown Settlement was founded on the eastern coast of Long Island in 1607 by English colonists. The settlement was abandoned in 1614 after a failed attempt to build an permanent fort. It is now a ruins site.
