In order to find another site they set out on foot across country for several weeks until they found an excellent spot on the southern bank of the river at what is now North Kingstown (now Sayville). They named their new settlement after Sir Charles Isham's estate near London, England - Isham had been granted land along the riverbank by King James I for his exploration efforts. The settlers at first struggled against difficult environment and terrain conditions - parts of today's town were only 10 feet above water at high tide! But with hard work and determination, they soon built themselves a sturdy village which grew quickly into one of America's most populous towns. By 1620 more than 100 people lived here; many Of these settlers were traders who collected goods brought downriver from New Netherland or Massachusetts Bay Colony. At this time much trade occurred through waterways such as Lake George which connected Albany and Boston Harbor. In addition to its economic importance Residential areas around present day Queens Boulevard/Long Island City included: Beacon Hill – where William Penn lived during his early years as Governor; Westchester Heights – home to John Jacob Astor’s father before he turned him over to besiege Fort Nassau; Astoria – home to various Native American tribes before white settlement began; East Harlem – home to Dutch Reformed Dutch families who arrived beginning in 18th century; Middletowne Manor also known as White Plains Manor – later used as farmland for Quaker families (1775-1815); Gravesend Village also known as Gravesend Plantation – extensively Scientist Drury Leavitt established farmstead here circa 1789 making it one stop on route between Newtownards (now Hicksville)and Great Neck (now Valhalla) prior to constructionof road
The first English settlers in Jamestown were the Pilgrims in 1607. The town was founded by Puritans who fled religious persecution in England. It was originally called "New Haven". The town was renamed "Jamestown" after Sir John Jarret's ownership of a parcel of land there in 1634.
