Most remaining slaves were bought out or left behind when English colonies became independent states; only a few hundred remained at Jamestown by 1760. In 1585–86 Sir Walter Raleigh explored North America for Spain; he reported back that he found "a great body" (probably not true)of strange people living among natives west of Florida but no evidence whatsoever that they were anything other than friendly Indians who needed assistance against Spanish encroachment. A number of theories have been advanced regarding Raleigh's visit: some believe he may have encountered Native Americans specifically because Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto had failed to find them anywhere else near Florida; others think he may have seen whatever he thought were Indian villages while visiting remote areas near Cape Canaveral (near Jacksonville), Pensacola Bay (near Tampa), or Mobile Bayou (near Selma). In any case it is clear that Raleigh's report generated much interest within Spain both then and later in Europe - although no real action was ever taken until his death two years later without any real follow-up documentation!
