However during World War II Industries closed down everywhere but Syracuse while downtown experienced significant destruction due to bombing raids by American forces which inflicted great losses on civilian infrastructure including churches and residences. After World War II growth resumed with new industries like housing development (Lamborghini), professional services (IBM) and pharmaceuticals (Pfizer) until recent times when layoffs have taken hold throughouttown resulting in large negative impact on economy

Ithaca has been a center for learning and culture for centuries, and its many historical landmarks reflect that fact. The first Europeans to visit Ithaca were French missionaries in 1614. They named the settlement after Mount IthACA (present-day Tompkins County), in present-day Greece. An early settler was Nicholas Longueville, who arrived in 1702 and built a cabin on the south bank of Cayuga Creek. The first College of William & Mary opened in 1803 on what is now Elmira Road near Waterloo Street. In 1814, General James Kapp marched his army through Ithaca during his campaign against Napoleon Bonaparte, stopping at the college before crossing the Hudson River into Canada. In 1825, John Cogan became president of William & Mary; he increased enrollment to 30 students per class from 12 single men and 10 women alternate each term but maintaining an open door policy towards Native American students because of reservations covering most of Central New York west of Mohawk Lake). In 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C., John Hay visited Ithaca as part of his investigation into Lincoln's assassination process. He delivered an address at Carleton College on April 6 that helped spark national concern about racism towards Native Americans living east of Missouri River in what is today Oklahoma Territory by those living westward across Kansas Territory–the so-called Great Sioux Nation–and their land acquisition efforts since federal Indian law did not recognize any Indian nations other than those under direct control or supervision by Ulysses S. Grant’s military forces as “tribes” subject only to treaty negotiation and governance by United States officers exercising jurisdiction overetermined bands or villages” (Fitzgerald). On October 5, 1865 Congress passed legislation called “An act to provide for organizing Indians forcibly removed from their homes within this country [in Indian Territory]…” which provided financial compensation (between $5 million and $10 million) to individual tribes members who had been forced onto reservations between 1830 and 1862 while some continued to live peacefully until they were forcibly relocated en masse due to government policies known as “ Dawes Act” (Lincoln personally approved allocating these funds through executive order).
