Ithaca, New York is a small city in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. It is the seat of Ithaca County and the largest city in its southeast corner. In 1858 two brothers by the name of Green bought an undeveloped lot on the south side of Cayuga Lake for $2 per acre (1/8 mile). They began to build a home which they called "Green Gables." When they had completed it they sold it and built another home which they called "Cottage Grove." This house remains standing today as part of Cornell University's Old Campus Historic District. In 1872 three men by the name of Griggs bought some land east of Cayuga Lake for $10 per acre (3/8 mile). They began to build a farmstead which they named Griggsville after their leader George Griggs. The farmstead still stands today as part of Griggs Village Historic District near North Park Street and Seneca Avenue in north central Ithica. In 1876 Jesse Latham purchased some more land east of Cayuga Lake for $20 per acre (7/8 mile). He began to build a farmstead which he named Lathamstown after his friend and neighbor Moses Latham who had come from England with his family when he was only 8 years old. The farmstead still stands today as part of Lathamstown Historic District near South Park Street and West Genesee Avenue in southcentral Ithica In 1902 John Hurd bought some more land east of Cayuga Lake for $30 per acre (12/16 mile). He began to build a farmstead which he called Hurdstown after his son-in-law John Hurd who had also come from England with his family when he was only 8 years old . The farmstead still stands today as part of Hurdstown Historic District near South Park Street and West Genesee Avenue in southcentral Ithica . In 1916 Lewis Hilliard acquired some more land eastof Cayuga Lake for $40 per acre (15/64 mile). He began to build a house which he called Hilliardtown after Lewis Hilliard who had also come from England with his family when he was only 8 years old . The house still stands today as part of Hilliardtown Historic District near South Park Street and West Genesee Avenue in southcentral Ithica
