When Cornell University was established in 1865, it chose Ithaca as its site because it offered easy access to students from all over New York State. Over time, Cornell grew into one of America's largest universities with campuses in many cities including New York City (where it maintain a main campus), Chicago (where it opened an international campus), Toronto (home to onecampus), Montreal (the first university in North America to offer a graduate degree program in engineering), Beijing (opened its doors to international students in 1974), Lima (a joint venture between Cornell University and Peruvian Universidad Mayor de la Lima) and Santiago de Chile (opened his doors to international students in 1994). Many famous people have been associated with Ithaca - most notably Calvin Coolidge, Woodrow Wilson, Eleanor Roosevelt and Tolstoy - all while living or working here during their careers. Some examples include James Baldwin who wrote about life in rural Georgia before moving to Harlem; Langston Hughes who spent several years writing at his home on High Street; Alice Paul whose rise to fame began when she appeared on Soul Search; Woody Allen who directed his first feature-length film here; Obama announced his candidacy for President here; Chuck Schumer was born here too – he currently serves as Minority Leader Of The United States Senate!
