Ithaca, New York is a town in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, United States. The population was 10,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ithaca County. As of the2010 census, Ithaca had a population of 18,566. The first settlement in what is now Ithaca was made on May 11, 1788 by commissioners from Albany and Schenectady to purchase land from a band of Seneca Indians who had recently surrendered after a long war with France. This purchase also included some land that would later be developed as Cornell University. Ithaca Township was organized on April 26, 1814 and became part of Chenango County on February 3, 1827. On January 1st 1870, Townshend Auditorium became the first public building in what is now Ithaca when it was used as an office for the Town Clerk and Justice Court until it was replaced by the current building in 1906. The present day Town Hall Annex Building served as its temporary home from 1870-1871 while construction proceeded on the permanent structure which opened in 1907. Prior to becoming an incorporated town in 1912 (effective March 15), Ithaca consisted only of two hamlets: North Ithaca and South Ithaca. These were consolidated into one village within three years following their incorporation; however North Ithaca still maintains its own government and community services apart from those provided by South Ithaqua Village until today."
