Hempstead is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 11,241 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is the most populous town in Nassau County and the third-most populous town in the state of New York after Brooklyn and Queens. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The Town of Hempstead was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 as part of what are now East Harlem and Upper Manhattan. In 1764, when Great Britain acquiredompony from France, it merged with Newtown (now Sayville) to form Hempstead Township. In 1803, under Federal government control, Hempstead became a separate county named for Englishman Nicholas Heath (1754-1835). The name was changed to Nassau County in 1821 following British acquisition of all but two of America's then 25 counties. In 1860, the towns of Sayville and Farmingdale were annexed into Hempstead; Farmingdale again became an independent municipality in 1922 when it separated from Sayville. In 1953, bothSayville and Farmingdale united with Hempsted to form one municipality again known as Hempsted Village/Farmingdale until 1971 when that same name was given to both municipalities as one entity once again – this time split between Sayville and Farmingdale proper – resulting in their current designation as two separate towns within one municipal area known simply as "Hempstadt." Since its incorporation into Nassau County on April 1st 1902 through an act by the Legislature which created a new county government with local autonomy each town elected three members instead of 2½ years earlier via direct vote apportioned among themselves; Hempsted has experienced rapid growth rate (+20%) over the past 100 years especially due to its location within easy commuting distance by public transportation including I-95 & I-84 highways while still maintaining its small school district size making it easy for residents to get involved politically at all levels including city councilmember (2 seats), village boardmember (3 seats), fire commissioner (1 seat), 5th class supervisor (4 seats), 6th class supervisor (3 seats) & 1st class magistrate’s court judge [appointment only] . However recent news headlines have caused some concern about how continued growth will impact environmentally friendly land use practices such as reducing water usage for streetlights along with other initiatives such as plans for more open space which could include consideration for creating off-street parking spaces
