Hempstead was founded by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1664 as a small village on the east side of Hempstead Creek. The first buildings were erected in the early 17th century and included a chapel, a tavern, and shops. In 1814, the village became an incorporated town. The population reached 4,500 by 1851 and 11,000 by 1920. After World War II, the population decreased to about 1,000 until it increased again in the 1970s due to new housing development. By 2000, Hempstead had shrunk to its current size of about 750 people.
