Hempstead is a borough in the New York City borough of Manhattan. The population was 20,719 at the 2010 census. The name "Hempstead" is derived from Hempstead Creek which flows through the borough. The first settler in Hempstead was Nicholas de la Hontane, who purchased land from the Lenape people in 1684. In 1775, he and his wife founded what is now known as La Hontane Manor on Broadwalk Avenue in Hempstead Township. In 1814, James Caldwell bought 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land east of present-day Broadway between Park and Columbia Avenues for $5 per acre ($20 per km²). This area became Caldwell Heights and remains so today. In 1827, Henry De Lancey donated 400 acres (200 ha) to the town of Hempstead for public use and development; this tract became known as Laurel Hill. In 1835, Abram Hewitt established a mill on Mill Pond near present-day Brentwood Boulevard in what is now Hewittville. In 1876, Nicholas de la Hontane sold his holdings to John A Wright for $2 million –the largest gift ever made to any U.S.–Canada community by an individual at that time. Wright built two large mills on opposite banks of Hempstead Creek: one on Laurel Hill Road and one on Ridgefield Road just outside of town limits; both were destroyed by fire years later but left evidence behind including part of a dam which still stands today tall beside their former sites (see photo below).

In 1814, Andrew Johnson was elected president of the United States and Hempstead became one of his residences. As a result of its position on Lake Ontario between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, Hempstead developed into an important commercial center for both towns during the 19th century. During World War I, hemp production increased due to military needs for rope and other materials used by soldiers and sailors. After the war, however, hemp prices collapsed due to overproduction from Asia and lack of demand from American consumers. However, hemp cultivation continued through the 20th century thanks to its potential as a renewable resource. Today, Hempstead remains a small town with active businesses and a strong community spirit that has helped it maintain its ranking as one of America's most historic communities
Hempstead was founded in 1788 as a small village on the east side of Hempstead Lake. The town grew rapidly, and by 1834 it had become an independent village with a population of 5,000. In 1877, Hempstead became one of five villages consolidated into the town of Hempstead Township. In 1954, the township was dissolved and its residents were divided among seven other townships in new York County.
