In 1824, Henry Dearborn organized a township, which became Hempstead in 1833 when he donated land to that purpose. A post office called Hempstead was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1865. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Hempstead supported Confederate forces while also becoming a center for cheese production due to its good soil and ample rainfall. After the war, many farmers returned to their former ways, but Hempstead continued to grow slowly until it reached its current size during the late 20th century. Today, Hempstead is home to a variety of businesses including retail stores such as Walmartand Sears; agricultural products stores such as SuperValu; several churches; two high schools; and five homes owned by developers who create new housing estates throughout town each year.
