Hempstead, located in the town of Hempstead on Long Island, is a unique community that has been home to many optical businesses for over eighty years. In 1906, E.L. Morse and Company opened their first Optical Shop in Hempstead and soon became an important player in the optical industry. The company continued to grow and prosper during the years until it closed its doors in 1969. However, Morse's legacy lives on as one of the most noted optical companies in New York City. Today, some of the oldest operational optical businesses still operate within the confines of Hempstead – including Ives & Sons Opticals and Sells Camera & Glasses. Additionally, recent additions to this community include local optometrist Dr. James Aiken's practice and Sam Rayburn Optical LLC., which specializes in photography and video production services.

In 1847, Nicholas-Jacques Conte opened a business in Hempstead, New York, which became the world's first commercial optical store. The store was located on Main Street and sold lenses and other optical equipment. In 1848, Conte married Henrietta Mott and the couple moved their business to a new location on Clinton Street. In 1853, Conte opened an additional store in Utica, New York. In 1860, Conte migrated his business to Niagara Falls, Ontario. There he continued to sell optical equipment until his death in 1865.

After the war, Hempstead lost much of its manufacturing capacity but has continued to grow as an agricultural community. Hempstead is a village in the town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the large and populous Hempstead–LIC ward in Nassau County. The town of Hempstead was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The current name of Hempstead derives from Englishman Nicholas de la Halle who came to Long Island in 1627 and named it after his English home of Hebridgeworth, Renfrewshire. In 1714 Jameson moved to what is now Hempstead from Newtown Square on Staten Island. Jameson built a log cabin here which still stands today as one of the earliest homes in the village. On July 4th, 1714, he published an article in The Daily Advertiser entitled "A Prospectus for a Village on Long Island" proposing that within 10 years all present inhabitants move there from their homes on Staten Island. In 1834 John Woolsey set up a sawmill close to where he now lives and began processing hempseed into fabrics and other items for export around the world such as crates filled with raw silkworm eggs which were then sent down to Shanghai to be woven into clothing for American customers during the early 1800s. At this time there were only two schools; one serving children grades K-12 and one serving grade three through seven students with Mrs. Woolsey running it while her husband worked at his mill outside town hours until late into the night compiling data onto looms used to weave fabric products utilizing milled hempseed rather than linen or woolen yarn made from animal fiber sources like cotton or flax which had been popular since before Columbus journey discovered America over 1000 years ago! In 1892 Samuel Slater established Slater's Paper Mill providing pulp paper products such as newspapers and magazines with its own press and delivery service throughout much of New England including many churches along with local governments throughout eastern Queens; this was also followed by Slater's Leather Works (now known as Slater's Hardware) producing leather goods including saddles, boots, harnesses etc., both inside and outside their bakelite factory located on Main Street between Forest Hills Drive and Eastern Parkway across from Yankee Stadium where Yankees played baseball games during those days! As new industries emerged over time they often merged or competed with each other resulting in some degree of consolidation but always keeping their personalities alive within their respective communities including that of Hempstead where coffee salesmen would walk around selling beans on Boardwalk Avenue near East River Park until well after midnight! This entrepreneurial spirit continues today with several small businesses located downtown such as Home Services Unlimited offering pet care services including dog walking/walking dogs (am I allowed to bring my cat?), water filtration systems for residences (already done), propane heaters (did you know we have propane heaters!), flowers (!), ice cream sundaes (!), frozen yogurt (!), air conditioning (already done!), candle making (done already!)...the list goes ON! Today Hempstead is considered part of central Nassau County having strong economic ties to Farmingdale-North Babylon-Dundee-Thousand Islands City combined making it an important cultural center for this densely populated region immersed within larger metropolitan areas like New York City proper whose residents commute daily into these villages for work or pleasure commuting rates are cheaper than even NYC’s Central Park – another heavily traveled area day & night!
