Hempstead is a small village in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is located on the north shore of Long Island. It is part of the Bridgeport-Stroudsburg-Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Hempstead was first settled in 1655 by Captain John Smith and his party during his journey from England to North America. The area that now contains Hempstead was originally part of the Manor of West Milford until 1713 when it passed to Sir George Clinton's estate upon his death. In 1814, Nicholas de Lancey bought the manor from Clinton's widow and moved the villagers there from Milford because he feared Indian raids. According to one story, a shipwrecked sailor named Anthony Rudd found an abundance of hemp plants while sailing off Long Island in 1524 and brought them back to civilization as far as Hempstead before dying on board; this gave rise to the name "Rudd's Harbor." A second account has it that Anthony Rudd came ashore after being lost at sea and discovered some stalks of hemp seed which he planted near where he later found watermelons (thus naming "Hempsted" after him). In 1655, Captain John Smith sailed into what is now Hempstead Harbour on his way from England to North America with 12 men including himself and two Indians. They landed on July 4th at Little Sandys Bay just inside modern-day Stroudsburg beach town limits; their voyage continued up Long Island Sound under cover of night and they arrived safely in New York City six days later on July 10th. On July 14th they disembarked their supplies at Kingsborough Narrows before continuing upriver along present-day Main Street until they reached Stamford Bridge where they spent Monday night August 2nd before continuing their journey today downriver until reaching Norwalk about 2:00 PM local time yesterday (August 6th) arriving safe in Canandaigua prefecture today morning (August 7th). The site of present day Hempstead became known for its rich tropical gardens which were used by English royalty for medicinal purposes during the seventeenth century following Discovery expeditions such as those led by Jameson et al.. Some diseases treated included measles, whooping cough, dysentery & pneumonia etc.. After Henry VIII’s Dissolution of Parliament in 1660 many noblemen took advantage of government grants given out for planting new plantations throughout Great Britain whilst others emigrated seeking a better life abroad……….. Many people believe that much important early Dutch colonial trade with Europe through Rhode Island took place through India Gate near modern day Holmdel NJ also called “Hempsted Gate”…. By 1700 much land had been sold or leased for agriculture within sight or soundof major American cities like New York City . Even though these activities occurred long ago we can still see evidence left behind such as fields filled with corn husks picked clean many years ago… Today you can find remnants such as old fences & gates still standing dating back hundreds if not thousands years
