Hempstead is a small town located in upstate New York, about 25 miles northwest of Syracuse. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. With the rising prices of cotton and other agricultural commodities during the mid-19th century, Hempstead's merchants developed a strong linkages with their counterparts in Buffalo and Rochester. During World War II, many local families helped contribute to American victory by working on munitions production or providing food assistance to troops overseas. After the war, many people returned to their farms and businesses; however, some kept growing hemp until it became an illegal crop under state law in 1979. Today, due to prohibitionism and a lack of regulation from both federal agencies as well as individual states (including New York), marijuana remains one of America's most active illicit crops despite being legal under state law since 1937. Roosevelt; and Perry Mason among others
Hempstead was first settled in 1795 by Loyalists who left New York after the American Revolution. The town was named for John Hempstead, a Connecticut landowner and delegate to the Continental Congress. In 1802, the town got its own school district and in 1825 it became a city.
