Hempstead is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is considered to be a bedroom community for the larger towns of Brentwood and Farmingdale. The first people in Hempstead were Dutch colonists who settled there in 1624. The name "Hempstead" derives from the Dutch word "hemp", meaning hemp or cannabis, because this was the main crop being grown at that time. In 1764, when Hempstead became part of New York State, it remained an independent town until 1822 when it merged with other towns in Nassau County to form what is now known as Nassau County. In 1830, Dr. Benjamin Rush established a dispensary in Hempstead and began distributing medical supplies via horse and cart to neighboring villages. He also provided education about healing remedies to the local residents. By 1840, many other physicians had followed Rush's example and started providing medical care services through dispensaries throughout Nassau County. A gristmill and sawmill were built in 1836 by John Graves Simonds and George Halsey respectively; these mills are still operating today within the town limits of Hempstead Township (the same township that contains our present-day high school). In 1838 John Morse opened a store on Main Street which grew into one of the most successful businesses in the area due to its wide variety of items available for purchase including books, groceries, clothing and general merchandise along with flower arrangements and hats! The store continued operations until 1951 when it closed due to fire damage caused by Hurricane Floyd! The first post office was established in Hempsted on November 3rd, 1839 by Isaac Lyon (a farmer from Amherst) under the name “Newburgh” as part of efforts to promote trade between different parts of New York State during those early days before state lines got drawn up following American independence. It functioned continuously until 1860 when it changed its name to “Hempsted” after Abraham Hemphill (owner/operator) donated land for a new post office on Route 5 outside his farmhouse near Hackensackville where mail was delivered twice weekly then once weekly thereafter! During World War II much effort went into creating an underground military airport located just east of town near present day Uniondale Junction Road; this airport served as both basecamp for army troops deployed throughout southern New York during World War II as well as storage areas for materiel used by Army units on their march from beachhead throughNY into Europe etc… However all too soon this project came tumbling down due mainly to lack of funding however some modest progress has been made since then resulting in some small patches around town that may or may not have been visited recently 🙂 Municipal services such as water supply/maintaining roads etc… have always come First but with increased suburban development over recent years there has been less need for village functions like Parks & Recreation etc…. Nevertheless everyone involved agrees that if we want our children & grandchildren to enjoy living here forever we need more than just good old fashioned common sense!!!

Hempstead, New York is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 6,471 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is part of the Mohawk Valley region. The first settler in what is now Hempstead was Nicholas de Bry who arrived in 1664. In 1788 John Watts founded the village of Great Mills on Long Island and named it after his father-in-law's farm in England that he had visited while on holiday. Great Mills became one of the most important villages in upstate New York due to its location and access to good water supplies. In 1825 Joshua Ledyard bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land from Samuel Hogg for $1,500 and named it Hempstead after his friend Joseph Ledyard. At this time there were no towns or villages on Long Island and only a few scattered farms with a population under 100 people. The first mills were built by Ledyard around 1830 using shoemaking techniques learned from his English forebears. By 1840 there were 10 mills located in Hempstead with a total capacity of 500 looms; however, by 1850 only five mills remained operational including two owned by Joshua Ledyarden and two operated by Robert Fulton & Brothers which became known as the "Fulton Machine Works". In 1853 James Buchanan sold 466 acres (220 ha) of land within present day Hempstead Township to Humphrey Gibbs for $2,000USD making it possible for people within that township to incorporation into one municipality solely because they could own property therein without having to sell it again subsequently (the first such municipality was called East Hampton). The current Town Hall building was erected in 1865 following an effort led by Mayor Edwin Sanger which included contributions from various local businesses as well as subscription fees collected from residents along Prospect Street near Presentation Bridge.. A fire destroyed much of the original structure in 1938 but extensive reconstruction followed which includes new rooflines and walls, new flooring and significant refurbishment inside and outside the building itself as well as additions including a new gymnasium/auditorium complex on Post Road east of Main Street.. In 1951 Mayor Thomas Jaffe ordered demolition of all remaining buildings within sight or sound of Court House Square due to concerns about their use for military purposes during World War II although some remain extant today (most notably Old Court House). This order caused so much outcry among local citizens that he ultimately reversed himself less than an hour later allowing most intact buildings back into use pending further review Connecticut State Line whereupon numerous requests were made for permission to erect permanent fences around all properties line meeting certain conditions including being adjacent to open fields or agricultural lands etcetera resulting finally in approval being granted subject to appropriate changes being made subsequent thereto including erection/removalof fencing etcetera.. The former Chief Justice Building now houses a branch library while one side has been converted into apartments ..... On July 14th 2017 Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Authority announced plans to demolish several dozen storefronts located across four districts between Elmira & Lockport over fears they may not be able to meet budget demands should they stay standing
