Hempstead is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is the smallest of the five towns in Nassau County and was formed from part of the independent village of West Hempstead. The name "Hempstead" derives from Old English hænepsted (a word meaning "haystack"), since hay was one of its primary exports until about 1840. It has been suggested that the name may be derived from an early Dutch trader's farm called Heemskerk, which was situated on what is now Hempstead Road. The first Europeans to settle in present-day Hempstead were farmers who arrived around 1810. In 1814, Nicholas Colt acquired 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land east of present-day Nassau Boulevard and north of Canandaigua Creek for $5 per acre ($). This became Colt Land Company #1. John Jacob Astor bought out Colt's interest in 1825 for $30 per acre ($). Cotton farmer James Monroe built his home on what are now Main Street and Park Avenue in 1830. Monroe also founded the first post office in this area – Hempstead Station – which opened on December 12, 1830. The first store in town was built by Elijah Kingsbury on Front Street between Main and Park Avenues about 1830–31; it closed about 1840 due to economic reasons. In 1835, David Hogg purchased 100 acres (40 ha) northeast of Main Street for $10 per acre ($). Hogg farmed this land until 1861 when he sold it to Elias Howe for $15 per acre ($). In 1847, Samuel Morse established a gristmill on Millstream River along with his brother Alfred Morse and their father Moses Morse Sr.. These men operated the mill until 1862 when they sold it to Jno Purdy for $325 per year ($6 million today). After selling his interest in the mill to Purdy, Samuel Morse Jr., continued operating it as a manufacturer of electric lights until 1886 when he retired at age 77 years old due to failing health. In 1865, Simeon Stevens founded Stevens Paper Mills Ltd., which manufactured paper products such as envelopes and labels before expanding into other industries such as printing newspapers and making calendars during World War II. The company employed over 2200 people at its peak production capacity before closing down shop during the war because aluminum prices plummeted after America entered World War II without any allies willing to provide supplies or equipment necessary for Allied victory against Nazi Germany .
