The first schools were opened in 1814 in what are now Old Town and Springville. In 1825 Alfred Vail began growing Cannabis Sassafras trees on his farm now known as Valley View which provided early industrial hempseed with its essential oil used for paints, varnishes and other items until it was outlawed by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration regulations in 1937 In 1840 John Baptiste Point took over Point Lookout Lighthouse–the first lighthouse ever built on Long Island–and converted it into a hotel with rooms divided into wards called "rooms" (). After years of effort he succeeded in bringing production of local hemp products up to meet demand so that by 1851 all local mills had ceased operations due largely to prohibition but continued growth of industry under private enterprise led finally by Samuel Unwin who operated two large textile mills within sight of each other producing more than one million pounds of cloth per year starting about 1870 . Hempstead, New York is a small town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 746 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario and is bordered by the towns of Ronkonkoma to the east and White Plains to the west. The village of Hempstead was incorporated in 1846. It became a town in 1903. The first person to settle in what is now Hempstead was Nicholas Jordon, who arrived in 1795 from England. He built a log cabin on an swampy lot near where he lived until his death in 1827. His son John founded what would become known as Jordan's Mills, one of the earliest mills in this area. By 1840, there were about twenty-five homes and businesses active in what is today Hempstead Village. In 1847, Henry Leland bought land along Buffalo Bayou for $3 per acre (the current site of Buffalo Bayou Park). He began construction on a cotton gin and mill thereon which became known as Leland's Millinery Company. In 1850, he also purchased some lots around present day Lake Ontario for use as housing and called it "Hempstead". The early settlers used their homes and stores as barns or warehouses for drying goods during summertime when they could not farm due to lack of moisture availability from the lake bed below them; however, hempseed production did not commence until after express railway lines were built between Rochester and Toronto during the late 1800s."Leland's Millinery Company soon outgrew its original facilities; however, it still produced high-quality cloth continuously until 1916."
