In 1847, Anthony Alder purchased the Thomson tannery and continued it as an important Tanning concern until his death in 1863. Alder was succeeded by his son-in-law, James Warkentin, who operated the business until it closed circa 1899 due to economic challenges brought about by global recessionary conditions. In 1912 Warkentin sold his interest to John Sweeny who ran it until 1919 when it reverted back to being run by Alder's descendants through their company JW Sweeny & Sons Ltd.. It reopened under new ownership in 1951 after being dormant for many years.. In 1969 JW Sweeny & Sons merged with two other tanneries (ErieTanners Incorporated and Buffalo Tannery) forming what would become NYTAN Corporation which still operates today as one of America’s leadingtanneries companies."

Hempstead was settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The first post office was established in Hempstead in 1792. It was moved to New York City in 1802.
