In 1865 Alexander Graham Bell began construction on his famous Telephone Company line between Albany and Buffalo using parts of hisatan's property northeast of modern day Hudson Street in Downtown Hempstead - part of what is now called Belltown - which later became home to many other important pioneers including Thomas Edison and Cyrus McCormick who invented maize flour into an export product in 1886 The village consolidated with seven other townships in 1898 when Cayuga County was created from portions of Nassau County . On July 1st 1912 all but one company incorporated - that being Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (now Rockefeller University) which did not amalgamate until 1915 The population peaked at 10,000 around 1920 before slowly declining over ensuing decades due largely to farming competition from larger towns such as Syracuse , Buffalo , or Rochester . However overall growth has been moderate since then with most residents commuting into larger cities or nearby rural areas . The current population stands at 7,824 according to the 2010 census
