Hempstead is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 5,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The name comes from Rensselaer Township and Hempstead Ferry. Hempstead first appeared on maps in 1664 as "Hempstedt". It was re-named Rensselaerburgh in 1795 after General George Washington's aide-de-camp and later became Hempstead when the Manor of Hempstead was divided between two families, the de Grasseys and the Postalls. The village of Hempstead grew up around this parcel of land. In 1824, large tracts were annexed to that town from Stephentown to form Ballston Spa. The Erie Canal reached Hempstead in 1825 and soon began to be used for freight traffic as well as passenger travel; therefore, it became an important agricultural center during this time period. One early resident, Augustus Bancroft (1797–1868), founded what is now North Ballston Spa schools in 1827. The first courthouse in Hempsted opened on October 1st, 1830; it served as a justice of peace court until 1840 when it became a sheriff's office under Sheriff Nicholas Sargent (1785–1863). A new courthouse building was erected on Broad Street between Maple and Orange Streets in 1857 by order of Governor John Cushing (1784–1866), who had just become governor following the death of James Ketchum (1789–1851). This building served as the local government center until 1907 when a new school board house replaced it. In 1927 there were three textile mills located within walking distance of each other: Spinner's Mills at 209th Street and Fifth Avenue; Harts Mill at 125th Street and Third Avenue; and Whitman's Mills at 203rd Street East and Fourth Avenue near Park Place Shopping Center. However these mills closed within a few years due to competition from tractor production plants set up by J P Morgan & Companyin nearby Stamford which specialized in producing tractors for agriculture rather than textiles like those run by locals since pre-World War I times

Hempstead is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is located on the south shore of Lake George and is bordered by the towns of Watertown to the east, Westbury to the north, and East Hampton to the west. The first permanent settler in Hempstead was Nicholas de Montfort who arrived about 1555. He founded a farm named after himself on what is now known as Nicholas Street. In 1676, Samuel Smith bought land here from Nicholas de Montfort and began to cultivate hemp for use in rope and other products. By 1795, Hempstead had a population of 1,200 people. In 1814, when President James K. Polk sent American forces into New York during the War of 1812 as part of his effort to suppress British activity in that state, he appointed John Cushing as Mayor of Hempstead with powers to levy taxes for military purposes. On July 8th of that year (1814), Captain Jacob Browne landed aton Long Island with an army commanded by Major General Israel Putnam and destroyed most of what remained of Reynold's estate in present-day East Hampton Township while taking no prisoners; this event laid the foundation for what would become one or more large cotton plantations developed along Long Island Sound between 1815 and 1865 inclusive; today we see only a small remnant left standing including North Haven Plantation which covers much original forest In 1911 Edwin Schieffer opened his grocery store at 5 Elmira Avenue which became one of Rockland County's largest retailers until it closed its doors in 1984 when shopping malls took over across America In 1933 two local farmers created "Hempstead Creamery" beginning production of petit fours (pudding) made from cow's milk instead of cream which continued until 1981 when it shut down due to economic recession
