Hempstead is a small town in the Towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead, within Nassau County, New York. It is located on the east bank of the Long Island Sound, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Great Lakeshore and 14 miles (22 km) northeast of Farmingdale. The population was 11,511 at the 2010 census. The village started as a farmers' commune on Hempstead Creek in 1793. In 1828, it became part of what was then called Westchester County. On November 3, 1845, it became an incorporated village again under the name Hempstead. In 1917-18 its gazetteer listed 25 businesses; by 1920 there were only six remaining businesses. In 1945-46 when Nassau County was merged into Suffolk County, Hempstead reverted to its original name but with no business listings since then; it reassumed its current status as an unincorporated hamlet in 1951). The first settlement in present day Hempsted was made by Dutch colonists who arrived here from New Netherland in 1624 and named their new land "Haarlem". A post office called Haarlem had been established here by 1795 and remained in operation until 1828. The first settler to die here was Captain Cornelius Van Dyck who died while exploring Long Island after being shipwrecked near Oyster Bay in 1664. A gristmill that operated on the creek for over 175 years powered much of the early development of this small community which now spans 5 square blocks bounded by Railroad tracks on one side and Route 9/10 on another - making it convenient both for transportation to local markets as well as manufacturing needs such as paper products and plastics that are exported all over the world today!
