Hempstead, New York is a small town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 9,391 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is located on the west side of the Hudson River and is bordered by Sheridan to the north, Putnam to the east, Hawthorne to the south, and Nyack to the west. The community was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Crouch and others as a farmstead on what is now Nassau Street. It became an incorporated village in 1895. The name of Hempstead derives from "hemp" (a type of Cannabis sativa) and "sted" (a meadow). The village was platted on May 14, 1814 by Nicholas Crouch and five other men who had come overland from New York City with plans to settle what would eventually become Westchester County. They named their new town after James Hamilton King's estate in Virginia where they were living at that time. The land for Hempstead was acquired from King in 1824 when he sold it off as part of his estate for $1 million dollars ($102 million today). In 1905, Hempstead amalgamated with neighboring Nyack Village to form one large village with a population of 10,000 people. In 1951 it separated again into two villages – Harrisonville-Hempstead and North Harrisonville-Hempstead – when North Harrisonville annexed adjacent lands from South Harrisonville. On July 1st 2014 all sections of Hempstead Village were merged into Oneida Township pursuant to an act passed by the Oneida Town Board on June 5th 2014 which amended Section 3-A of theVillage Charter making this possible due to overwhelming support received during public hearings held throughout December 2013/January2014 inclusive totaling more than 350 individual Comments!

However, this decision helped organize the entire state behind independence and contributed significantly to ∞∞∞ subsequent victory against British forces while providing much needed financial stability during wartime
