Hempstead is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,041 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is located on the southern bank of the Mohawk River. It began as a small hamlet on high ground above the river near modern-day Canastota and was originally named after Hendrick Hudson, an early settler. The first white settlers arrived in 1772 and erected their first cabin around that time. In 1824, they founded the village of Canastota and changed its name to Hempstead because of its location on the then new Canal Road between Albany and Syracuse. After several years of growth, Canastota was absorbed into Hempstead in 1857. The post office continued serving both towns until it closed in 1870 due to lack of business competition from larger villages within Rockland County. During World War II, many local industries produced materials for military use including munitions production and shipbuilding; however, these have all since closed down or been replaced by other more established businesses. Today Hempstead is a quiet community with a few restaurants and small retailers providing services such as agriculture and home improvement products; however it retains some of its pioneer characteristics including its strong sense of community activism which has helped keep it one of the most livable communities in Rockland County.

The bombings killed over 50,000 people and destroyed more than 1 million homes.
Hempstead, New York is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. The name "Hempstead" is derived from the Dutch word hemmet (a type of paper), and "New York" is derived from English words anglice New Netherland and Long Island. Hempstead is part of the Rochester–Dundee–Fulton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Hempstead was organized in 1785 by Puritans led by Moses Greenough. It became a regular borough in 1802 and an incorporated town in 1865. In 1868 it passed a resolution to secede from the province of Canada because of its lack of representation for the town's 1,500 residents. On December 5, 1868, Hempstead voted to remain within Canada when Kingston voting Results showed that over 60% of voters wanted to leave as well. As a result, on December 12th and 13th all but two members of the General Assembly came out against secession and Hempstead reverted back to being an incorporated town with no vote at all in provincial government decision-making processes since it lacked representation therein. In 1896 much land near what is now Watertown was donated by Dr Samuel Morse to found Westchester University; Hempstead Campus straddles both towns lines today due to their shared history/cooperation with one another - Norton Science Center borders on Watertown while Miller Library & Research Park straddles onto Old Hwy 9 southbound near exit 127A). In 1926 Hempsted's first school opened after many years of planning as Friendship School #1 located on Main Street between Church & Potter Streets which served students grades K-12 until 1957 when it was moved across street & replaced by Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish School which continues today as Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Elementary School followed by St John's Episcopal School (now parish church) adjacent property purchased in 1916 which became our present day High school building completed in 1966 just before Gov Nixon announced plans for a new high school downtown called Polytechnic Institute – this project however never came to fruition although now under construction on adjoining lot finally completing around 2020! Among others who have helped shape or contribute significantly to this vibrant community are: Revd Dr James A McDonough (founder/director Westchester District Mental Health Care Authority), Mrs Dorothy McGuinness (founder/manager Friends World Committee USA - predecessor organization then known as National Council for American Women), RevdDr Joseph Monell (director Brooklyn Psychiatric Hospital since 1997), Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (former City Councillor -mayor from 1994-2001) his wife Judith Nathan(former Deputy Mayor also running for office 2004-2007), actress Liza Minnelli(founder/director historic Mayors Fundraising Campaign 'Here Today We Serve'), current Honorable Rosalynn Carter(former UPN Ambassador 1990s-2000s).
The town of Hempstead was founded in 1784 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The first settler, John Cumming, arrived in 1785. In 1812, the town was renamed after General James Monroe.
