Hempstead is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,758 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Hempstead consists of a downtown area and six hamlets: North Hempstead, South Hempstead, East Hempstead, West Hempstead, Glen Cove and Sayville. The first settlement in what is now Hempstead was on the east side of Long Island by Nicholas Colt and his brother Samuel Colt in 1664. In 1785 two brothers named Jameson bought land on which they built a small farm called North Greenbush; this developed into Sayville (now Glen Cove). In 1814 John Morse located a piece of land three miles east of Sayville on which he erected a house and began to cultivate hemp crops. This became the nucleus for what would become Hempstead. In 1860 George Washington Carver moved from Jenkintown, Pennsylvania to Nassau County to become president of Cornell University and found an opportunity for hemp farming thereabouts; this led to development around Carver's campus includingSayville and Glen Cove with their own stores and dwellings. By 1870 about 100 acres had been planted with hemp crops yielding between one-and-a-half and two tons per acre; but it was not until 1907 that commercial production really began with the opening of the first Dutch Weighbridge hereabouts by A&P Potato Products Company under license from Holland’s State Weigh Bridge company as part of a program to promote American agriculture through exports. During World War II local farmers produced more than 2 million pounds (1 metric ton)of dried cannabis flowers which were used as fuel for Bomber Command planes bombing Germany; these plants were also processed into fiber products such as paper, plastics etc., while some still remain in use today all over the world having provided much needed jobs during wartime when hemp was not widely available outside Eastern Europe
