Hempstead is a small town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is the largest local government unincorporated community in Monroe County and home to the Hempstead Rifle and Pistol Club, a marksmanship society that has been around since 1814. The town's namesake comes from the prevalence of hemp crops in its area during the late 1800s which led to its nickname "The GreenTown". Ammunition production began in Hempstead in 1824 when Captain Nathaniel Lyon shot an animal with his own rifle from a hilltop overlooking the village. This early ammunition was made of lead shot and musket balls. In 1830, Daniel Freeman started manufacturing cannonballs and other muzzle loading projectiles at his farm on West Main Street. By 1840, several other manufacturers had joined him including Samuel Colt who produced firecrackers for display at fairs. In 1854-55 Isaac Stevens built a mill on White Marsh Creek west of town to produce bucker (a type of ball) bullets using coal mined nearby Ithaca. Production continued until 1862 when Congress bannedmunition imports due to issues with Indian trade not being compliant with US regulations. The mill closed down and most use of Bucker Bullets ceased soon afterwards as well because they were no longer effective against buffalo or deer meat that became increasingly common throughout much of America due to advances in agriculture equipment etc.. During World War II munitions manufacturer Corcoran Rubber Company located downtown produced thousands of tons of rockets, mortar shells and artillery rounds alloys used by both American and Japanese forces alike right up until their surrender at Hiroshima on September 2nd 1945

During World War II, armor was primarily fought with tanks and armored cars rather than infantry soldiers wearing guns and bows firing arrows over distances up to 100 yards (91 m). As such, incendiary weapons—such as incendiary shells fired by cannons or mortars—were very effective against unarmored targets but less so against armored targets such as tanks or personnel carriers moving across open ground protected only by small amounts of fortified concrete fortifications (e.,g., pillboxes). To overcome this problem, armies began using antitank mines as well as other devices such as minefields which disrupted movement within enemy territory while parked vehicles could easily move through them without being damaged or destroyed

In recent years there has been renewed interest in the importation and sale of high-quality cultivars of industrial hemp grown in North America (e.g., Canada or Europe). The first settler in Hempstead was George Washington who purchased land from the Dutch at present day's Middletown. The town became a part of New York City on January 1, 1898.
