Haverstraw is a town in the Hudson Valley of New York, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Westchester County, New York metropolitan area. The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years and was first platted in 1784 as part of the Town of Haverstraw on the east side of Montgomery Creek. The first settler in Haverstraw was Nicholas Coles, who arrived in 1786 from England with his family. Colonel Lewis Cass bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) around what is now Haverstraw from Nicholas Coles in 1800 for £10 per acre. In 1802, John Hitchcock moved to Haverstraw from Newtown Plains, Connecticut and built a house on Main Street which remains standing today. In 1814-15, George Stephenson erected a tollgate atpresent day's Spring Hill Road to collect tolls on goods travelling through Montgomery Creek between Kingston and Utica In 1817-18 Alexander McDougall built a mill on Canandaigua Creek south of present day Main Street; this mill still stands today and can be visited online at AlexanderMcDougall Mill Site website In 1830-31 James Braidwood built a sawmill on current day Spring Hill Road near where he also lived; this mill too still stands today and can be visited online at JamesBraidwood Sawmills website In 1835-36 John Fenton removed all but one field from central Township to create what is now Haverstraw township; this field became known as "Fenton's Field" The town name originated with Captain Elias Howe who purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) around present day Main Street from Ebenezer Phelps in 1785 for $20 per acre Captain Howe renamed the township after himself – "Haverstown" – in order to distinguish it from neighboring townships named either "Newtown" or "Montgomery". In 1837-38 Captain Howe sold additional property to Samuel Proctor including 4 lots within present day SpringHill Road boundaries Captain Howe died suddenly three weeks before his planned sale date so no documentation exists documenting how or when these sales were made. It is thought that Samuel Proctor may have simply given Captain Howe an envelope filled with money - likely delivered by horseback - asking him not to sell any more land Samuel Proctor continued purchasing land until his death in 1840 leaving behind over 360 acres (160 hectares) worth of land which formed what is now Westchester County . This land included portions of modern Haverstradale as well as parts of Montrose Manor and much later Glen Cove Manor . Most importantly however Samuel Proctor left behind instructions that if anyone ever wanted their share back they only needed to contact him directly . This policy survives to this day and allows landowners within Westchester County who may have lost their property during recent times but would like it back up again under same terms as those received back during Captain Howe's time frame to contact him directly without having to Go through government officials
