Haverstraw is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Albany and Schenectady. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is the only town in the Mohawk Valley. The first humans to live in Haverstraw were Native Americans who occupied what is now known as Haverstraw Heights since before 1614. In 1785, settlers from Vermont arrived in search of land west of Albany and began building homes on what would become Haverstraw Heights. By 1825, every male over the age of 10 living in Haverstraw had received a U.S. passport and could travel anywhere without need for a visa or entry permit. In 1859, by order of President James Buchanan, all Native Americans living east of Seneca Lake were removed from their lands and moved west into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). This event is commonly referred to as the "Athletic Invasion." The menfolk of Haverstraw petitioned representatives from Albany to remain until they could find new homes elsewhere but were refused; by 1861 all men under 25 had left for good. From then until 1865 when the area became part of New York State, there was no legal boundary between Canadian and American territory so any man who wanted land north or south of Seneca Lake could claim it regardless of whether he actually lived there or not One resident during this time period who made an impression on everyone was Isaac DeWitt Clinton Sr., better known as "Governor Clinton". He came to live in Haverstrand after his family left Vermont and started ranching around 1820 along with another man named John Averill Grant (1811-1881). When steamboats arrived at the Hudson River port at Plattsburgh for shipment downriver during those days we used launch ramps which took us right up into Plattsburgh where we disembarked our boats - these ramps still exist today next to downtown Plattsburgh! After storelifting two years ago I did some digging up evidence that one Governor Clinton also built a home hereabouts back when he presided over our lot! It's said that Governor Clinton was very popular with his tenants because he always put them first - even if it meant giving them less than they needed or demanded...he never hesitated to help out anyone shorty needing assistance no matter how big or tiny their problem might be! He once saved my life while I was being held hostage by Indians near Syracuse - although I didn't immediately realize it at the time! You see him walking down Main Street hand-in-hand with General Washington himself just prior to surrendering Saratoga Springs?!? That's pretty impressive stuff ! Besides being an excellent farmer/leader/mankind) he also loved playing music on his organ which you can still hear playedstrings within earshot today if you go out onto Front Street near Third Avenue - plenty folks used to gather around him playing acoustic instruments whenever they felt like it back then ! There may have been more famous residents such as George Washington Carver (the father), Patrick Henry (the Patriot), Buffalo Bill Cody (!), etc but those are just a few examples !! Haverstraw has experienced different waves throughout its history including Dutch colonial times when people grew corn and potatoes; influxes of French colonists; British colonial times; American Revolutionary War; post-revolutionary period including Prohibition era; various migrations following World War II including Italians, Poles and Slovaks among others There are many restaurants and cafes in town that offer unique dishes made fresh daily in local ingredients such as eggs Benedict served on sourdough bread with ham hocks insteadoftoast&jalapeno dressing &grapefruit salad etc.; there are also several wineries scattered about making wine available for purchase either direct from vineyards or through independent distributors . As mentioned earlier most residents work outside the community though some do have businesses within town limits providing essential services such as plumbing, lawn care etc . There are several churches located within walking distance including St John’s Episcopal Church which offers Sunday morning services opposite First Presbyterian Church , Holy Trinity Lutheran Church across First Avenue from Post Office plaza & Lutheran Reformed Congregation across Second Avenue from schoolhouse

Haverstraw is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,481 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Haverstraw is located on the southern shore of Niagara Falls and lies between its two main bodies of water: the Erie Canal to the south and Lake Ontario to the north. The first settlers in Haverstraw were Congregationalists from Boston who arrived in 1786. They built a house on what is now Main Street. A gristmill was founded soon after by Captain John Smith and his son James. In 1814, Reverend James Waddell moved to Haverstraw from Schenectady and began preaching there. He became known as "the Reformer of Haverstraw". The first post office opened in 1827, but it was discontinued due to lack of mail traffic. The first store was established in 1851 by John Stephenson with a shop on Main Street serving farmers and traders up until 1870 when it moved to opposite Second Avenue which served as its present address. In 1881, an electric light company was organized with headquarters at 5 Greenlawn Ave., just outside of town limits (which included Haverstaw). It operated for about 30 years before being merged into the Niagara Electric Company in 1938; however, some remnants of this company still remain today within Haverstraw's borders as part of First Niagara Energy Corporation's system services department (formerly called NERC System Services). A new high school opened in 1954 which served students from townships along both sides of Highway 9 including those within Haverstaw itself; this school closed in 2001 following reductions made by then Superintendent Driscoll as part of state budget cuts overall affecting education throughout New York State In 2006, Connections HealthCare Center opened its doors providing medical care for residents through outpatient clinics housed inside several buildings on Elmira Road across from Town Hall; eventually this facility would be expanded bringing yet more patients under one roof with resultant cost savings brought about by better coordinating health care facilities statewide Hovering around $10 million annually (~5% total municipal spending) since opening additional sidewalks & bike paths has helped support local businesses while also improving access to transportation options making shopping/dining nearby much more easily available

It was named for John Haverstraw, a wealthy landowner and politician who played a leading role in the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century, thanks to its natural resources and rich agricultural fields. By 1800, Haverstraw had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1814, it became part of New York State and attained city status. During the 19th century, Haverstraw experienced rapid growth as aresult of new industrial development and its location at the mouth of theHudson River made it an important port for trade with Europe and Asia. In 1916, Haverstradewere merged into New York City and continue to grow until World War II when they were devastated by bombing raids from Nazi Germany. Although post-war redevelopment has led to increased commercial activity in recent years, there is still little room for expansion within the current boundaries of Haverstown Township
