Haverstraw is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Jefferson and Monroe Counties. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Haverstraw was Jedediah Haverstock in 1777. He married Susannah Weare and they had six children: Samuel (1778-1851), Anna (1780-1820), Lydia (1782-1857), John (1785-1864), Mehitable (1787-1873) and Isaiah (1800-1853). The community started as a farmers' colony and prospered until 1814 when it lost its charter to be allowed to establish trading posts with Canada. In 1824, two men from Kingston, Ontario arrived in Haverstraw with oxen to purchase land for a wagon road linking Buffalo and Rochester. They named their new settlement after George Washington, who had been president during their time ofroughs. In 1830, the town voted to annex what were then parts of Monroe Township and also gained land from Albany County including present day Webster and Brockville townships. The boomtown years ended by 1840 when a severe drought caused many farms to fail; most people left for other opportunity or returned home. With few permanent residents remaining by 1860 there were only 802 residents living on 146 acres of original farmland that covered . At this time there was no school or sawmill so much as an agricultural store which sold feed for animals and produce for local consumption; salt pork came from Killian's meatpacking plant down the street). Most residents worked in nearby villages such as Webster or Brockville where wages were higher than at home so they could support themselves AND their families while still keeping some connection to their rural roots through trade goods brought back overland from Canada each season.). Additionally, there are several smaller flags surrounding the pole radiating outwards from it symbolizing various aspects of that battle including artillery fire, cavalry action, and human bravery. Today, it is still considered an important moment in American history as part of its commemoration process for both sides involved in that conflict as well as for all those who have participated in or witnessed related events throughout history.
Haverstraw is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in the area were three men from Holland who came to Haverstraw in 1814 and platted the town on land that they had bought from the Mohawk Indians. They named their town after Haverstraw Creek. A post office called Haverstraw was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 1951. In 1827, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on what is now State Route 12 near present-day Schenectady. He named his fort after his family's home in Haverstraw Village on Hudson River Valley soil. The fort served as a base of operations for his exploration of California and Oregon during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1847, Sutter sold his interest in Sutter's Fort to Samuel Morse Sr., who renamed it Western Union Station after himself and erected a new building thereon that still stands today as one of New York City's most important transportation hubs. In 1865, Andrew Johnson became president of the United States; he appointed General James Longstreet to lead troops into Mexico to quell an insurrection there against Ulysses S Grant's Ulysses S Grant Expedition which had been launched without congressional approval only days earlier by Johnson under pressure from Radical Democrats determined to bolster their case for re-election against Douglas over Grant - an issue which would become increasingly critical as Reconstruction continued throughout America following the Civil War.) After Longstreet defeated Mexican general Francisco Villa at Buenavista Pass near Veracruz on October 20th 1865, American forces entered Mexico with smallpox-inflicted fatalities among them (See also: Battle of Buenavista Pass). On November 3rd 1865 General James Longstreet wrote this letter about Villa: "He has surrendered...I cannot find any troops left here worth fighting for." "Haverstraw" means "a little stream where trees grow"; "Stroud" comes from Robert Stoutland (1759–1837), an Englishman who settled hereabouts around 1795; "Creek" comes from Old English hæverce meaning 'a meadow or pasture' with cognate roots elsewhere including Scots haggis ('hagelog') and Welsh hawrach 'to cleanse'.
