The village was first settled in 1764 by farmers from Haverstraw, Suffolk, England. It became an incorporated village in 1854. The present community was formed when parts of neighboring villages were annexed to Haverstraw. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,471 people, 2,814 households, and 1,567 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,965.7 people per square mile (693.2/km²). There were 3,031 housing units at an average density of 792.3 per square mile (309.4/km²). During World War II, Haverstraw played an important role in producing munitions for General Dwight D Eisenhower's army during its drive into Germany. In 1954, Haverstraw celebrated its centennial with a parade and Festival of Fine Arts event which included displays from local businesses and art galleries as well as music from local bands. In recent years, spas have become popular tourist attractions in Haverstraw; however, real estate prices have made many residents affluent enough to live outside of their homes while still retaining much enjoyability of their community amenities such as its riverfront park which overlooks Long Island Sound.
