Haverstraw is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Verona, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settler in the area was Peter Haverstraw in 1784. A post office called Haverstraw was established in 1807 and remained in operation until 1861. Haverstraw has been home to a large manufacturing and agricultural sector ever since its founding. One of the most significant industries of early Haverstraw was tanning which led to many buildings being built along the river for tannery workers and their families. Many local products including flour, cheese, bacon and eggs were exported from Haverstraw during this time period. The town consolidated with other villages within Saratoga County starting around 1800 as county government became more centralized following the American Revolution. Catherine Briggs developed what is now downtown into an active business district during this time period as well as new housing developments across from State College Avenue near present day Veterans Memorial Stadium (then known as bondskill Stadium). In 1824 John Smeaton purchased 100 acres (41 hectares) on the east side of Town Lake where he erected a sawmill powered by water power; it remains one of many mills located within town limits today! By 1827 Smeaton had also constructed gristmills on both sides of his mill pond; these remain operational to this day! In 1828 Nicholas Long established a blacksmith shop next door to Smeaton's mill operated by his son Nicholas Jr.. This industry would continue up through World War II until it too came to an end due to technology advances! As agriculture took center stage throughout much of mid-19th century settlements such as Haverstraw growth slowed while factories grew larger and more numerous; however, there are still several small businesses left operating today that contribute greatly to local economy! One such business is Farmers Dairy which produces extensive amounts of raw milk for local consumption!
