In 1837, John Fenton bought land around the village for $1 million and founded Fordham University; it remains one of America's largest universities. In 1902, Haverstraw became part of Utica Township; it reverted to its original name in 1955. In 1965, it became a part of Rensselaer County; it still retains that name today.

Haverstraw is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Haverstraw is known for its Quaker Meeting House and General Store which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first European settlement in what is now Sullivan County was made by Nicholas de Forest in 1667 on land he bought from the Mohawk tribe. In 1772, the territory was organized into three counties, and Haverstraw became part of Sullivan County. In 1814, when it became part of the newly formed state of New York, Haverstraw incorporated as a village. In 1821, Haverstraw voted to secede from Sullivan County and become an independent town under the name Oneida (the name of DeForest's original grant). The vote was driven by a dissatisfaction with agricultural prices being arbitrarily set by county officials at rates that favored Albany merchants over local farmers. After much debate and some violence between community members and county officials, Oneida incorporation was approved by voters in November 1821 and came into effect on January 1, 1822. Like many other villages founded during this time period within New York State (and later nationwide), Oneida struggled economically during its early years due to limited resources and high transportation costs necessary for goods access to marketplaces outside of one's village boundaries. However, like other communities across New England during this time period that also pioneered new technologies or adopted new ways of life such as railroads or electrification in their townships or villages (such as Danbury or Stamford), Oneida slowly grew more prosperous over time through innovation and sustainable economic practices such as employing local labor rather than outsourcing services to distant factories; developing a paper industry; investing in infrastructure including schools; expanding voter turnout through elections held every two years; and maintaining open communication channels with residents throughout thevillage for common purposes such asissue management or social welfare purposes.
