Haverstraw is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Haverstraw was first settled in 1795 by refugees from upstate New York during the French and Indian War. A post office was established in 1803, and in 1827 the name was changed to Haverstraw after General James Wilkinson's victory over British forces near Haverstraw on October 15, 1827. In 1861 the town became a part of Erie County when that county was created from portions of Niagara and Erie counties. The population declined until it reached its current level of 1,914 in 2000. The town has two public schools: one high school and one middle school; a library with over 100 titles including books about history, science fiction, fantasy and other genres; several businesses; an annual fair; three golf courses (one for men only); a water park; and two churches—the First Baptist Church which was founded in 1800 as a Methodist church and now conducts services there every Sunday morning before 9 am., and also St John's Episcopal Church which dates back to 1636 as well as many other buildings dating back to early settler days such as gristmills and sawmills. There are also several private homes scattered throughout the community but they are not typically open to visitors so please be aware that they may have limited access to amenities or could be closed altogether due to privacy issues. Haverstraw is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Dundalk, NY-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Haverstraw was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1494. The village was platted in 1784 by Captain John Montresor and Rev. Jonas Legate as part of a grant from James Clinton to Abraham Lincoln for his kidney donation. In 1820 Haverstraw became an incorporated town under the name ofpton (from Old English hāvera "bridge" + ton "town"). In 1857, two brothers named Caleb and David Winthrop founded a small grocery store on Main Street which they continued to run until their death in 1906. Other early businesses included a blacksmith shop and harness shop on Green Street; a post office (founded 1827); three schools: one for boys (1829), one for girls (1831), and one for adults (1834); and two residences: One built in 1785 by Ebenezer Preston as home of Reverend Moses Simons; and another erected about 1840 by Captains John Montresor and George Clinton at the corner of Lewis Avenue and North Fourth Street. The Village School District No. 5 opened its doors in 1918 with 137 students using ten classrooms including an auditorium/theater that seated 350 people during assemblies held each weeknightfall before vaudeville performances or matinees opposite Columbia University's Schaum Hall between 1901-1903; however, this school failed to meet budget mandates set by then Superintendent Francis Waring after World War I caused disruptions due largely to strikes among teachers unions over pay disparity among towns within New York State government). With only 35 students enrolled through September 1922 when it shuttered following financial difficulties incurred frominsufficient supplies of building materials furnishings fixtures etc., Haverstraw may have been too small for such large ambitions despite some commendable community spirit shown throughout its short history – like having streetlights installed beginning during the 1925–1928 school years just prior to World War II upon request from local residents who were concerned about potential bombing attacks against nearby villages while also ensuring night safety while attending evening classes inside Schaum Halls!
