Haverstraw, New York is a town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lewis County. The first settler in Haverstraw was Samuel Westcott in 1792. The town was organized on February 14, 1824 and named for General James Wilkinson Haverstraw (1765-1810), who had served as a colonel in the American Revolution and then as ambassador to Russia and Great Britain. In 1827 the town bought from Levin Hicksland an estate called "Bellevue" which encompassed . In 1828 it purchased from Amos Shepard another tract of land including . In 1830 Haverstraw voted to become a part of the new state of New York. At that time there were only three towns in Lewis County: Kingston, Defiance and Auburn. The vote was 4to1 to join NY; but when NY became a state in 1850 it lost Haverstraw along with all of its other counties except Broome andsuspended voting rights by law until 1860 because of objections by local farmer groups who wanted more attention paid to their crops rather than state government affairs. In 1861 it re-joined NY after being granted full voting rights again based on its population growth rate over the previous decade; however annexation into Erie County followed two years later as part of that same process. The first post office opened at Haverstraw on October 1, 1825; it closed on December 15th, 1865 due to increasing mail volume caused by industry development near the townspeople’s homes along Route 9A (now I-495). A new post office was established at Auburn on January 1, 1886; it remained open until 1969 when it merged with Haverstraw proper to form one large post office under the name “Haverstraw/Auburn” which remains operative today. It is also home to one of America's oldest libraries - founded in 1870 by Captain George Prentice - still located within walking distance surrounded by farmlands today while portions have been demolished for construction or redevelopment projects over time such as this one project currently planned adjacent to what once housed what used to be our old high school building pictured below: Today much like before rural life continues unchanged with some changes such as more recent residents moving closer towards larger city centers while others maintain an agricultural lifestyle maintaining accessorial farmland

Haverstraw is a hamlet in the town of Roxbury, New York, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of the towns of Haverstraw and Roxbury. The village began as part of an estate owned by Nicholas Pellovert, who bought it from Sir John Eliot in 1662. In 1714 Haverstraw was granted to one William Floyd and then to his son John Floyd in 1735. In 1786, James Kieft purchased the estate from John Floyd's widow and moved all of his family to Haverstraw. He made extensive changes to the village and built a school, church, tavern, brick kiln and other small improvements. In 1892, during World War I veteran Julius Caesar sold his farmstead for $2,000 to Haverstraw residents Isaac Forster and Edwin Crouch. They subdivided it into lots for housing purposes and developed it into what is now known as Forster Heights. The first home there was built in 1912 by Averell Harriman with funds supplied by Mr Forster himself. Next door were two large barns which were used as storage facilities until they were replaced by larger buildings in 1922-23; these also served as classrooms for local high school students up until that time Fayetteville High School (now called Marist College). Haverstraw continued to grow rapidly through new development throughout the 1920s-30s but slowly peaked with its population peak of 611 people reported in 1940 census; however this number has gradually been declining since then due mainly to suburbanization within town limits which has impacted both agricultural production within town boundaries (primarily dairy)and access to public transportation within Roxbury Township limits which has led to an ever-growing concentration of people near highways leading into New York City or Buffalo rather than inside their own communities where they could enjoy many unique aspects unique only to them such as farmers markets oraturday night marketplaces etc...
