Haverstraw is an agricultural town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,959 at the 2010 census. In 1861, James Buchanan donated four thousand acres (18 km²) around what is now downtown Haverstown to the state for development as Buffalo State Park. This land includes portions that are now parts of downtown Chicago Heights and Elmhurst; however, all but about 10% remains within today's borders of Haverstown Proper including Main Street between Broadway/Washington Boulevard and Cherry Lane/Michigan Avenue; First Congregational church on Cherry Lane; Schoolhouse/Parsonage on Washington Boulevard ; Drury Hall on Main Street near intersection with Broadway/Washington Boulevard; old post office building located at corner then north side current day corner with Michigan Avenue near modern day high school lot; present day medical center buildings standing next to original building lots on Trinity Road just east side line between streets which once were Highways 9 & 20
