Haverstraw is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome, NY-NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Haverstraw was John Aiken who arrived on July 9, 1784. Aiken's nephew Eliakim Aiken settled in Haverstraw about 1807 and his wife Hannah became the first woman to live in the town when she moved from Oneonta on October 5th of that year. The Town of Haverstraw was incorporated on February 20, 1836 by order of Governor George Bemis. The original plat for the town included a total area of . In 1842 it received an addition of land west of First Street and east of Third Street which made it its present size with a total area of . On November 15, 1870, Abraham Falkendorf (1821-1900) donated 60 acres (24 hectares) to the town for use as a public school farmstead known as "Falkendorff's Farm". On December 31, 1907 Mayor Charles Fenton dedicated the new Recreation Hall which had been built adjacent to Falkendorff's Farm. In 1910 President William Howard Taft visited Haverstraw during his visit to Utica and spent time at "Falkendorff's Farm" where he played baseball with local youth and listened to lectures by Dr. Root about agriculture from an open air stand located near what is now known as Main Street. After being re-elected mayor in 1912 despite being challenged by Alfred Epps Ackermann (D), Haverstraw lost its charter status on January 1, 1913 due to lack of voter turnout; however it regained its charter status on January 3rd 1913 after reaching an agreement with Utica Mayor James Phelan whereby Ackermann would run for office but not serve if elected while also serving as clerk/Treasurer/Clerk for the Town Council vacated by Fenton following his death four months later on February 6th 1913 In 1916 when America entered World War I both Ackermann and Phelan enlisted in the war effort and left their positions as City Clerk & Treasurer respectively; however they continued to serve until their retirement two years later On May 25th 1922 Isaac Neuman donated unto the Town $1 million towards improving infrastructure withintown including streets done through resurfacing; this donation allowed increased access into town center past First Avenue southward beginning just before Route 13A crossed Route 13 northward becoming Park Avenue thereafter making Haverston intersection eligible for streetlights creating business areas along each side giving businesses more visibility while still limiting traffic congestion downtown thereby increasing economic development opportunities withintown In 1948 when retail shopping began opening up throughout southern New York State along I-480 Corporate Boulevard such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy’s Incorporated opened up shop across from Stroud School followed quickly by Wacoal stores Presbyterian Stores Incorporated etc.; these openings upend traditional retail shopping patterns withintown resulting in decreased demand for services rendered by store employees resultant in many layoffs over ensuing years finally leading to closure or termination thereof several times during this time period culminating with Storey’s closing down main entrance onto Park Ave circa 1976 leading directly thereto thenceforth parking Lot direct access thereto becoming available upon request only days prior advance notice required
