In 1868, Haverstraw residents voted to incorporate as a village. The first public school was built in 1872. In 1876, the first telephone line was installed in Haverstraw. In 1925, the first electric streetcar service arrived in Haverstraw. In 1958, the Village Board decided that a new library would be constructed on Town Street. The library was dedicated on October 10, 1958 and has been serving the community ever since. On July 1, 1966, Haverstraw lost its charter as an independent village and became part of the larger town of New York City.
Haverstraw, New York is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie County town of Buffalo. The village was founded by settlers in 1812 and named for Haverstraw, a small hamlet in Somerset County, England. The name changed to Haverstraw after American Revolutionary War General George Washington's Headquarters were moved to the village from West Point in 1778. Haverstraw was represented in the New York State Senate from 1792-1827 and first became a city on July 1, 1856 when it merged with the neighboring towns of Buffalo and Tonawanda to form what is now Erie County. The village had two churches until 1975 when it closed its doors due to financial difficulties. In 2007, however, the church reopened as an outreach center for misdemeanor justice prosecutions out of district attorney’s office in Buffalo – one of only three such programs statewide. Scheduled services are held at 7:00am every morning until 11:00am each day except Wednesday which falls on Martin Luther King Jr Day; 9:00am services start at 10:00am; and 3:00pm services end at 4:30pm each day except Saturday night where they last until 6pm sharp. There are also Sabbath services available during non-weekend days (except Saturdays).
The first handgun with a light was the Colt Model 1851 “ Navy Model”. This weapon had a small, low-power lamp on the front of the barrel that could be used to identify targets at a range. The British military used these pistols during World War 1. In 1911, two manufacturers introduced handguns with lighted barrels- Smith & Wesson and Ruger. These weapons were called the “Ruger Redhawk” and the “Smith & Wesson Model 10” respectively. However, these weapons did not gain widespread popularity until after World War 2 when they became popular in both civilian and law enforcement use. In 1949, Glock introduced their first handguns featuring strikerfired chambers that featured self-contained hand grenades hidden beneath them inside magazine wells (the Glock 17 and 19). With this innovation, Glock became one of the most popular gun manufacturers in America. Haverstraw is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It was originally part of the towns of East Haverstraw and West Haverstraw. The first settler in Haverstraw was Nicholas Facesy who arrived in 1785. William Barnes purchased the land from him in 1802 and founded the village of Barnes on it in 1803. In 1830, Amos Kendall bought the village from Barnes and established Kendallville as its second settlement. On October 11, 1834, Haverstraw became part of the newly formed Town of Rockland with a population of 709. The first post office opened in 1835 and remained open until 1917; its last name change was to Haverstraw Post Office on March 15th, 1922. In 1865-66 Wm J Fenton built a gristmill which became an important center for early commercial farming and agricultural production in what is now eastern Rockland County. In 1931–32 Edwin Sibley developed much of present day North Station Road into modern day commerce with his famous Sibley's Department Store which still stands today (a contributing factor to its preservation). During World War II many American soldiers were housed here during training exercises at nearby Southwick Air Force Base before being sent home to their homes across New York City or directly to Europe where they served our war effort as Allied flyers or submariners etc..
