It is part of the Clinton–Dodds County, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community started as a hamlet on the east side of Haverstraw Creek and derived its name from another small stream nearby which was also called Haverstraw Creek. The first settler in what is now Haverstraw was George Washington who arrived in 1784. One early resident, Philip Hardwick purchased land in 1811 and began to build a new home that became known as "the White House". He served as governor of New York from 1825 to 1830 and lost an election to Andrew Jackson because he did not support Jackson's candidacy for president. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Haverstraw and ordered his troops stationed there to disband because he felt that Reconstruction had been done too slowly in America after the Civil War. In 1868, when Abraham Lincoln traveled through Clinton-Dodds County for his second inaugural address, he stopped at Haverstraw for lunch and excused himself due to poor visibility; he then rode back into Northumberland County without stopping at Haverstraville or other towns in the county. In 1903, Drury Lane Theatre opened on Main Street with seating for 375 people; it was one of several theaters built around this time around New York City by Pabsts Brewery founder Jacob Riis. That same year saw the opening of First National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase) on Elm Street across from the theater which would become one of many downtown businesses that would survive during prohibition until it was replaced by buses in 1933. Bryan Whitman played Mayor Jimmy Doolittle's brother Al Capone in "Capone" at First National Bank on Elm Street between 1951-1957 A number of stores closed during Prohibition but reopened under various names such as Gilded Cage Producers Supply Co., Second American Chemical Company (later Dow Chemical), Maple Leaf Tobacco Sales Co., etc.; many remain today including Lowman’s Clothing Store (#1 on Main St.), Mrs Haas’ grocery store (#2 on Main St.), Harry Wexler’s cigaret store (#5 on Main St.), John Fenton’s ice cream parlor #6 (now Joe’s Pizza), etc.; some were demolished while others were converted into apartments or office buildings over time

The first permanent settler in what would become Haverstraw was Andrew Jackson, who arrived in 1784. By 1800, there were 4 families living in the town. In 1822 the village of Haverstraw was established and by 1830 it had a population of 100 people. In 1834, Congress approved the Town of Nassau's petition for incorporation as a village and on April 14th that year residents voted to incorporate as a town with a population of 350 people. On September 12th 1835 the Town of Haverstraw became an incorporated town with a population of 1,500 residents. A post office called "Haverston" was established in 1836 and remained in operation until it closed in 1903. The first school opened on May 25th 1840 and taught 6 children from rural areas to read and write English. The school also served as the home for many local farmers during their early years when they did not have schools themselves
