They may also have used the area for hunting and gathering purposes because there were abundant game reserves around the cape that still exist today. In 1786 Nicholas Haverstick erected a small log cabin on what is now Main Street in what is now Center Point Park as his home until he died in 1814 aged 76 years old (after which his wife reoccupied). A plaque marking this spot reads "NICHOLAS HAVERSTRAW" Weakened moral character due partly to alcoholism." This house served as both an inn and residence for many years before being replaced by an enlarged frame building which still stands today on property across from Main Avenue and between Broadway and Second AvenueAvenue frontage just south of Center Point Park; it has been added to National Register of Historic Places as part of its Village history block.). Mrs Gertrude Jukes lived here from 1865 until her death in 1969 (the last recorded owner). James Purdy bought this house from Mrs Jukes’s daughter-in-law Barbara Purdy circa 1971." Another early occupant was Coles Ebenezer who arrived about 1800 along with Abram Van Wyck diary entry dated Apr 25th 1800 states: 'I landed at Gravesend about 3 pm yesterday after having passed through Ledyard Neck.' He moved near where First Presbyterian Church now stands'. Ebenezer's cabin #1018 can still be seen on centerpoint park proper although most likely dismantled over time b/c only two posts remainmodern day windows are all hidden inside brick walls behind intervening trees
