Haverstraw is a small town in northeast New York, United States. It was founded in 1795 by John Haverstraw and his wife Mary. The population was 4,527 at the 2010 census. The name of the town may come from the Dutch word "haar" meaning "hair" and "stroma" meaning "stream". The first settler in Haverstraw was John Cushman. He built a cabin on the banks of the Chenango River in 1798. In 1807, Captain Anthony Aucoin came to Haverstraw with his ship Thetis to purchase land from Native Americans for development into a township. Aucoin named the township after himself, Haverstraw Township. In 1811, when General James Wilkinson died without leaving an heir, his widow Sarah Ball became executrix of his estate and organized what is now called Wilkinson County as part of her settlement west of Buffalo Creek. She donated two tracts of land to start Haverstraw Township which eventually included all that stands today within its borders: present-day Averill Park and Hamlin Heights neighborhoods; parts of modern Schenectady and Cortland Counties; part of Plattsburgh; and much undeveloped bottomland along both rivers where current residents live today). On February 12th, 1812, initial platting for Haverstraville Village began with six families occupancy of three lots totaling . After over 20 years failed efforts by developers to gain approvals from various village boards (and ultimately Gov't refusal due to lack of evidence), final platting took place on October 10th 1860 with completion including: 1) Five lots - each measuring ; 2) One lot - measuring ; 3) one house - measuring , 4) Two Lots - measuring 5 lots - each measuring . This final plat marked one-sixth forever within present boundaries of present day Averill Park neighborhood while also creating future Prospect Heights neighborhood adjacent to then hamlet Lansingburgh on east bank across river from current site

Haverstraw is a small village in Ulster County, New York, on the banks of the Hudson River. It was first settled in 1752 by Captain John Haverstraw and his family. The present town of Haverstraw was formed from parts of the original village in 1847. The first mention of Haverstraw is in a deed dated December 24, 1752, by Captain John Haverstraw to Joshua Kieft. On October 12, 1753, Samuel Smith sold to Captain John Haverstraw one hundred acres (32 hectares) of land at what is now called "Savage Point". In 1800, Jacob Davenport donated 560 acres (200 hectares) to the Village for perpetual use as a public park. Captain John Haverstrom died on April 5th 1821 and is buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery near Buffalo. A granite obelisk erected in his memory stands outside the Village Hall. The current name for the village – "Haverstown", derived from "Haversburgh" – was given to it by General George Washington when he visited it during his military campaign against British forces in 1781-82. The settlement around which modern day Haverstrawn developed started out as two small hamlets: Savage and Heverlee. The first plats were sold Lots 2 & 3 on November 4th 1692 by Nicholas Daye to Thomas Prince and others for £5 per lot with an option to purchase additional lots at any time thereafter! There were only 8 homes built here between 1692-1702 but within a few years over 100 dwellings had been erected including many that would still be standing today! One such early home had been built by Nicholas Daye himself! By 1710 there were 114 households living here consisting mostly farmers with some fishermen also residing here until about 1800 when steamboats brought more people ashore! Many boats went downriver during this time so it's likely that many residents got their start fishing here too! By 1800 there were 283 families living here with total land holdings totaling 514 acres or ~43% of what they are now!!! In 1847 we moved our school across country because there wasn't enough space inside our old building... We made do using some temporary materials we had lying around like desks and chairs :)
