Haverstraw is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Orange and Ulster counties. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. The community began as a tiny hamlet called Haverstraw Plains on the west side of Haverstraw Creek. Haverstraw was named for Captain John Haverstock, who explored the area in 1785. In 1812, James Fenton purchased land from Capt. John Haverstock and renamed the community Haverstraw after himself. The name has been around for over 200 years and is still used today by many people in the community. The most famous resident of Haverstraw was General George Washington who lived there during his time as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and also spent several months in 1795 living with his family at their home on Fury Post Road before moving to Mount Vernon. Many other famous residents have also lived or worked here over the years including: Ulysses S Grant (1814-1865), Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921), Franklin D Roosevelt (1933-1945), and Henry Kissinger (1969-1978). Ivy Leagueeducated professionals such as Yale mathematician Alan Turing and physicist Edward Teller settled down in nearby Westbury during World War II to help feed America's military efforts; they are buried there together with many other members of that distinguished group along with local farmers, fishermen, musicians, etc., making up what is now known as Stoneleigh Cemetery & Museum District. Today much of what made earlier settlers prosperous has long since passed away - only a few businesses remain - but some aspects remain very dear to locals: sturdy Main Street storefronts displaying antique goods or hardware dating back to c1800; hearty local raise chickens that can be seen roasting over an open fire on summer days; delicious apple pies fermented in barnyards right outside door year round...the list goes on! Haverstraw is a small town in the Adirondacks of New York. It is located on the east side of Haverstraw Lake and was first settled in 1792. The town was named for John Haverstock, an early settler. The population of Haverstraw was 1,052 at the 2000 census. The Town of Haverstraw istis laid out in a grid pattern with three squares (north-south), each measuring 100 feet by 150 feet. The square footage within each square is equal to that within the larger square and there are no streets between squares. The land that makes up today's Haverstraw was first purchased by George Washington in 1790 as part of his purchase of lands around Cohoes Falls from the Mohawk nation. Many years later, when it became clear that Cohoes Falls would become increasingly important as a commercial center due to its location on Lake Ontario, Congress allocated funds to build a road from Rochester to Cohoes Falls so that goods could be transported easily between the two towns. This road is now known as Route 9A and forms much of the current border between Haverstraw and Cohoes Falls
