The Town of Haverstraw was first settled by Germans in 1795 and became a village in 1835. The name comes from the Haverstrom Stream, which flows through the town. In 1907, a hydroelectric dam on the Susquehanna River were built by Pennsylvania Power & Light Company to power an electric light plant downstream at Lock Haven which started operation in 1909. The townspeople petitioned the state government to buy the plant but did not receive approval until 1912 when they changed their minds and bought it themselves instead The company continued production until 1954 when it merged with American Electric Power and ceased operations
