During the American Revolution, many Patriot soldiers from Haverstown enlisted in Colonel John Sullivan's regiment which fought at Saratoga Springs and other locations around western New York. Many local men also joined up with British forces during the war, including General Israel Putnam's brigade which fought at Fort Clinton on Lake Ontario. Afterward, many local men returned home to rebuild their homes and businesses following the revolution. In 1812, George Washington visited Haverstown while on his way to Albany for winter quarters and remarked about its good location near Kingston across the river; he recommended that it be renamed "George Washington Village". The name stuck and has been used ever since by locals as a symbol of community involvement in nearby Utica-Rome-Newburgh metropolitan area (URA). Today, much of what once made up George Washington Village – such as churches, schools/universities/medical facilities etc.– are gone but portions remain downtown as well as several blocks along North Main Street between Market Street and West Streetsocket Avenue where people still gather to enjoy live music or watch sports events taking place outdoors each summer evening without interruption or fear of crime or traffic congestion outside city limits!
