It is part of the Erie County metropolitan area and its name comes from John Harrison, an American Revolutionary WarGeneral and frontier trader who founded what is now Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1781. John Harrison's son, James Harrison (1755-1828), served as a U.S. Senator from New York from 1821 to 1825 and again from 1830 to 1835; he also administered justice on the court system for much of that time period. His grandson Daniel Webster (1809-1865) served as a United States Senator from Massachusetts during the Gilded Age (1858-1872). Another grandson, Alfred Everett Kreyfels (1904-1974), was Mayor of Buffalo, New York from 1951 to 1959. The town's economy has been based largely on agriculture since it was first settled by European settlers in the early 1800s. Today, horticulture and crop production are still major employers in the town; however, many other businesses have recently moved into town including technology firms such as Apple Inc., Intel Corporation, and Dell Inc., as well as professional sporting teams such as The Buffalo Bills and The New England Patriots. A number of famous people were born or lived here including Andrew Carnegie (1860-1937), author Wuthering Heights by E M Forster (published 1863), actors Edwin Booth Jr., Clark Gable and Douglas Fairbanks Sr., composer Franz Liszt (born 1860), basketball coach Rick Majerus ('The Axe Man'), actor/director Orson Welles ('Citizen Kane'), singer Sinatra ('Can't Hardly Wait'), politician Charles Evers ('Dixon Gray') and musician Neil Youngblood (' boxes'). The current mayor is Roslyn Eldridge with a two year term starting on July 1st 2020
The village of Harrison, New York was laid out on the east side of the Hudson River in 1792 by Major General George Washington. It was named for him and his wife, Martha. The village grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 residents. In 1812, Harrison became the seat of Orleans County, New York.
